Boxes for Bluebirds

by Wendy Jean MacLean

He is not trying to save the world
or change the course of history.
He’s just passing time
with his friend
in the wheelchair
in the rehab ward
of the local hospital.

After this visit
he is going to the local school
to build boxes for bluebirds
with the children.

He will never be mayor
or Prime Minister.
No one will praise him
for challenging the status quo.

But he dares to trust
that bluebirds make a difference
and a kind word
can give a sad heart wings
and a small box
nailed to a tree
can be a home
for a blue planet
threatened with extinction.
